The Royal Air Force (RAF) is undergoing a strategic transformation, and now it has a new leader to guide it. Air Marshal Harv Smyth has officially been appointed as the next Chief of the Air Staff. His Majesty The King and Defence Secretary John Healey approved the decision. Smyth will assume command in August 2025, replacing Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton, who is stepping up as Chief of the Defence Staff.
Therefore, this leadership change comes at a critical time for the RAF. The force is adapting to new challenges outlined in the government’s Strategic Defence Review. With decades of combat and command experience, Smyth is well-prepared to lead this strategic transformation of the RAF.
Moreover, Smyth joined the RAF in 1991 and quickly proved himself as an elite pilot. For 15 years, he flew Harrier jets in high-risk missions over Bosnia, Kosovo, Serbia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Additionally, he trained others as a weapons instructor, sharpening the skills of future RAF pilots.
However, since 2015, Smyth has held key leadership roles. Currently, he serves as Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff for Military Strategy and Operations. His deep operational expertise makes him uniquely qualified to steer the RAF through its strategic transformation.
In addition, Defence Secretary John Healey praised Smyth’s appointment. “He has outstanding credentials to lead the RAF in this crucial period,” Healey stated. “From frontline missions to senior command roles, he has served with distinction.”
Outgoing Chief Sir Rich Knighton also expressed confidence in his successor. “Harv will ensure the RAF remains ready to fly, fight, and win,” Knighton said. “Under his leadership, our air power will only grow stronger.” Smyth acknowledged the challenges ahead. “The Strategic Defence Review demands rapid modernization,” he said.
Furthermore, even as leadership changes, the RAF remains active worldwide. Others support NATO’s air policing mission in Eastern Europe. Meanwhile, the UK’s recent F-35A purchase and nuclear sharing role with NATO underscore the strategic transformation of the RAF.
