Strings Album Sound: Charli XCX Explores New Music Directions

Must read

Charli XCX has confirmed that she is experimenting with a strings album sound for her next release. The pop star discussed her evolving musical style during an appearance on Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop podcast. She hinted that her upcoming work will explore different textures and musical landscapes.

When asked if she planned to make music “super stripped back,” Charli responded that she admires Lou Reed and has considered creating minimalistic music. She added that she enjoys working in contrast and expects her next album to sound very different from her 2022 release, Brat.

Charli explained, “I’m exploring a lot of stuff with strings at the moment, which I’m really enjoying. I haven’t worked in that space before, and it feels refreshing.” The singer emphasized that change comes naturally, and she wants her next work to reflect a new chapter in her artistry.

Earlier this year, Charli hinted at her next project going in a completely different direction. She acknowledged that artists cannot repeat themselves and even joked that the album might “probably be a flop,” expressing that she welcomes creative risk.

In addition to her solo work, Charli has contributed original songs to Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights. She also collaborated with Jack Antonoff in 2023 to write music for the upcoming A24 film Mother Mary. These projects allow her to explore new sounds and songwriting approaches.

Outside music, Charli has started a career in acting. She played a comedic version of herself in the TV series Overcompensating and took lead roles in Pete Ohs’ Erupcja and 100 Nights of Hero, which screened at the London Film Festival.

Charli will appear in the adventure-comedy Sacrifice alongside Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Evans. She also joins the erotic thriller I Want Your Sex with Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman. Furthermore, she will star in Dakota Johnson’s directorial debut.

Looking ahead, Charli will produce and star in an A24 mockumentary titled The Moment. The film follows a pop star preparing for her first headline arena tour. Her exploration of a strings album sound signals bold changes in both her music and multimedia career.
