Scottish Labour MSP Colin Smyth faces grave allegations. Police have arrested and subsequently charged him. The charges relate to possessing indecent images of children. Consequently, Scottish Labour has taken immediate action. They have suspended Colin Smyth from the party. Colin Smyth suspended from the party marks a serious fall from grace for the politician. His status on the parliamentary website now lists him as an independent member.

Officers detained him at a property in Dumfries. He has represented the South Scotland region since 2016. Moreover, he has held several prominent frontbench roles for his party. Colin Smyth suspended from his duties has also meant he previously served as Scottish Labour’s general secretary. He is due to appear at Dumfries Sheriff Court soon.

He described these events as a profound shock. Then also called this a deeply stressful time for him. He assured everyone of his full cooperation with all inquiries. Furthermore, he expressed a hope for a quick resolution. However, he stated he could not comment further at this stage.

A Labour spokesperson confirmed the suspension. They announced the whip had been removed from Colin Smyth. This action is pending the outcome of a thorough investigation. Colin Smyth suspended immediately was understood to be due to the party learning of the police investigation. The party also said it cannot comment further while the investigation is ongoing. It is understood the party acted at the weekend.

Interestingly, his arrest occurred on August 5th. Despite this, he appeared in a social media video two days later. The video featured Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar. The party has since deleted that post from its accounts. This sequence of events raises obvious questions. The case continues to develop and will be watched closely.
