King Charles Prioritizes Duty Amid Cancer Battle as Italian Tour Begins
King Charles is continuing to uphold his royal commitments with determination, despite his ongoing treatment for cancer. At 76, the monarch has insisted on “putting duty before everything” as he prepares to begin a four-day official visit to Italy with Queen Camilla.
Sources close to the Palace describe the King as being “in great form and completely unfazed” following a recent hospital stay. He has been undergoing weekly treatment at a London cancer unit since his diagnosis in February but has managed to maintain a full diary of engagements, carefully scheduling treatments around his royal responsibilities.
Following a brief health setback at the end of March, when he was admitted for observation due to treatment side effects, Charles took a short rest at his Highgrove estate. This break allowed him time to recover ahead of the Italy tour. Aides confirmed that although some engagements were postponed, the trip to Italy was never in doubt.
The visit will include stops in Rome and Ravenna. The couple will also mark their 20th wedding anniversary during a state banquet at the Palazzo Quirinale. In addition to cultural engagements, the King is set to become the first British monarch to address a joint session of the Italian parliament. He will also meet with President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
This latest tour follows the King and Queen’s successful visit to Australia and Samoa last October. That trip was described by palace insiders as “the perfect tonic,” and Charles is reportedly eager to continue representing the monarchy abroad as part of a packed 2025 schedule.
Despite his illness, the King has had to manage both royal duties and challenging family dynamics. His younger son, Prince Harry, is currently appealing the decision to strip him of taxpayer-funded security while visiting the UK. Meanwhile, controversies surrounding Prince Andrew and his associations have continued to cast a shadow over the royal family.
One palace source commented that the Queen has been “invaluable” in stepping in for additional responsibilities, while the Prince and Princess of Wales have restructured their roles following the Princess’s own health challenges.
According to royal insiders, the King remains focused on his role and firmly committed to his constitutional responsibilities. His dedication echoes his first public address following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, where he pledged to devote his life to serving the country.
Although a planned visit to the Vatican had to be cancelled due to the Pope’s hospitalization, the King and Queen have expressed warm wishes for the Pontiff’s recovery. The revised schedule has also allowed the royal couple some breathing room during their busy visit.
Charles has visited Italy officially 17 times in the past, and this latest tour includes a focus on cultural heritage and sustainability. Planned events include a celebration of the Emilia-Romagna “slow food” movement, visits to Dante’s tomb and the Byron museum, and a commemoration of the 80th anniversary of Ravenna’s liberation from Nazi occupation.
As Charles resumes a demanding schedule despite personal health concerns, his message remains clear: his role as monarch comes above all else, and he intends to fulfill it with unwavering commitment.
