The UK government has selected ex-Labour politician and former broadcast journalist Delyth Evans as the new chair of Welsh-language broadcaster S4C. Evans, who represented Mid and West Wales in the Welsh Assembly from 2000 to 2003, will replace interim chair Guto Bebb, a former Conservative MP.
The appointment has drawn criticism from Welsh Conservatives, with Senedd member Andrew RT Davies warning it “risks public trust in Welsh media” following recent controversies at the channel. Last year, former S4C chief executive Sian Doyle was dismissed after a bullying scandal, prompting then-chair Rhodri Williams to step down.
UK Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy praised Evans’ “deep understanding of the Welsh media landscape” and commitment to public service broadcasting. Evans will face a pre-appointment hearing with the Welsh Affairs Committee on 23 April.
The Welsh Conservatives questioned the impartiality of the selection, citing concerns over political influence in Welsh media. A UK government spokesperson defended the process, stating it followed official guidelines and that political affiliations do not disqualify candidates.
