Former Scottish Conservative MSP Jamie Greene has defected to the Scottish Liberal Democrats, accusing his former party of embracing a “Trump-esque” style to appeal to right-wing voters. Greene, who served as a West of Scotland MSP since 2016, announced his immediate resignation from the Scottish Tories in a letter to leader Russell Findlay.
Speaking at the Scottish Lib Dems’ conference in Inverness, Greene described feeling “politically homeless” before joining his new party, which he called a “breath of fresh air.” Scottish Lib Dem leader Alex Cole Hamilton welcomed him, praising Greene as an “effective communicator” whose values align with the party. UK leader Sir Ed Davey also joined the celebration.
Greene criticized the Scottish Conservatives for focusing on “endless culture wars and fringe issues,” urging “compassionate, centre right Tories” disillusioned with the party’s direction to consider the Lib Dems. His defection marks another blow to the Scottish Tories amid internal divisions over populist rhetoric.
