A Green Party council candidate is under fire for serving a no-fault eviction notice on his tenant who happens to be his Labour opponent despite his party’s pledge to ban such practices.
William Pedley, standing in North Northamptonshire’s Victoria ward, issued a Section 21 notice to Kelly Duddridge, a Labour candidate who has rented his property for a decade. Duddridge, a mother of four, says the threat has caused her family “significant stress,” while Labour accuses Pedley of “rank hypocrisy.” The Greens nationally have campaigned to abolish Section 21 evictions, which allow landlords to reclaim properties without tenant fault.
A Green Party spokesperson said Pedley acted due to “personal circumstances,” needing the home for his own use. Duddridge, who faced a similar eviction attempt in 2016, vows to stay until legally compelled to leave, hoping to secure council housing.
The case highlights tensions over housing policy, with Labour’s renters’ reform bill which would ban no-fault evictions currently before the Lords.
