Green Party Could Become Kingmakers in Senedd

Must read

The Green Party says it is ready to act as kingmakers after the May 7 Senedd election.

Party leader Anthony Slaughter said a strong performance could directly shape the next Welsh government. Moreover, he stressed it could limit Reform UK’s influence. “The polls show that we may hold the balance of power in the Senedd,” Slaughter said. “A strong Green Party vote will help reduce Reform’s presence and focus on cutting living costs, fixing housing, and repairing the NHS.”

Meanwhile, visiting party leader Zack Polanski highlighted recent Green gains across the UK. He added that the Green Party can now win in diverse areas. The party is fielding candidates across Wales. In addition, internal analysis shows it is a key challenger in several marginal seats.

Recent polling by ITV Cymru Wales/YouGov suggests Plaid Cymru could emerge as the largest party with 33% of the vote, winning around 43 seats. However, this leaves them short of a majority. Reform UK is projected to finish second with 27%, while Welsh Labour drops to third with 13%. Consequently, the Green Party, polling at 12%, could win up to 10 seats. This could make the party pivotal in forming the next government.

Dr Jac Larner from Cardiff University said the contest is increasingly a “two-horse race” between Plaid Cymru and Reform UK. Nevertheless, Plaid still has more coalition options. The Green Party platform includes freezing rents, replacing council tax, lowering bus fares, and returning water services to public control. In addition, the party emphasizes environmental protection and sustainable development.

Candidate Tessa Marshall, standing in Cardiff and Penarth, said the election is critical for Wales’ future. “From lowering costs to protecting rivers and the natural world, Greens know we must deliver results,” she said. Slaughter concluded that the Green Party could influence government policy if the election results match the polls. Furthermore, he urged voters to consider the party’s potential impact on Welsh politics.

As the election approaches, the Green Party is positioning itself as a decisive force. In fact, even a modest increase in seats could grant the party kingmaker status. Finally, with May 7 nearing, the Green Party is working to maximize its influence on both policy and governance.
