Green Party MP Hannah Spencer walked through Manchester city centre under police escort after a brawl broke out at a far-right protest. Earlier, the MP for Gorton and Denton had spoken at the launch of Greater Manchester’s Together Alliance, a group opposing far-right activity, when tensions erupted.
Campaigners gathered in Piccadilly Gardens on Sunday for the launch. The nationwide group plans a “March to Stop the Far Right” in London on March 28. During her exit, a video shared on X shows two men carrying signs reading, “There’s no such thing as a transgender child,” following Ms Spencer, while her supporters stayed close behind.
One man shouted questions about transgender issues, asking, “Can a woman have a penis, Hannah?” Meanwhile, bystanders heckled him. Two men soon exchanged punches. Then, police quickly intervened. Other scuffles broke out between protesters and bystanders. At one point, a woman tried to snatch a placard from a man holding an anti-trans sign. Police escorted Ms Spencer to a vehicle near Burger King at the top of Market Street. Witnesses said she appeared “scared” and asked if she was okay.
A Green Party spokesperson said: “Hannah spoke about community cohesion and unity when a few angry men tried to spread anti-trans bigotry. Nevertheless, she won’t be silenced and will continue to represent her constituents.”
Ms Spencer became the Green Party’s fifth MP after winning the Gorton and Denton by-election on February 26, 2026. In her victory speech, she apologised to customers she had booked and warned that the British people are being “bled dry” by wealth inequality.
However, critics have highlighted contradictions in her record. Ms Spencer co-owns homes worth over £1 million and has taken multiple foreign holidays. She previously shared strategies for maximising profit from property deals. Additionally, some Instagram posts showed her beside a petrol car, raising questions about her environmental stance.
Gorton and Denton remain among Manchester’s most deprived areas, with incomes roughly 25 per cent below the national average. Consequently, Ms Spencer’s wealth and property holdings have sparked debate over whether her personal finances align with her party’s policies.
