As the House of Commons prepares for today’s emergency debate, MPs from across the political spectrum are voicing their thoughts on the government’s latest actions.

Anna Turley, Labour MP for Redcar a constituency once home to blast furnaces called the government’s move a “vital step” but also described it as a “bittersweet day.” Reflecting on the past, Turley shared on social media: “It’s hard not to wonder how things might have been different if David Cameron had taken these powers a decade ago and stepped in to save Redcar’s blast furnaces.”

Meanwhile, Reform UK MP for Boston and Skegness, Richard Tice, confirmed his party’s support for the government’s stance. “This is an important day. we need full nationalisation of British Steel,” he urged, pushing for stronger measures.

Green MP Ellie Chowns emphasized the need for nationalisation, calling it “the only sure way to protect this strategically vital sector, which is crucial for national security and British jobs.”

On the Conservative side, Martin Vickers, MP for Brigg and Immingham, drew parallels between Scunthorpe’s potential future and Grimsby’s decline after its deep-sea fishing industry collapsed. “I remember Grimsby’s downturn after losing its core industry. Many here have seen similar losses in mining or shipbuilding towns it’s a seismic shift,” he remarked.
