Jesy Nelson will reveal why she left Little Mix in her new Amazon Prime documentary, Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix. The 34-year-old singer shared a trailer on Instagram on Thursday, ahead of its February 13 release.
The documentary covers what Jesy calls the “most painful” period of her life. It follows her journey to motherhood and pregnancy complications. She experienced Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome. Additionally, she gave birth to twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, who have Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA1).
The trailer opens with Jesy looking at an empty stadium. She says: “I have never spoken about this. I just always wanted to entertain people. It felt magical and then it very quickly isn’t. I was the one that left.” Meanwhile, clips show her breaking down and sitting out of group rehearsals during her Little Mix days.
Jesy explains: “I’ve really struggled keeping all of this in… Now I’m ready to tell my side of the story.” She rose to fame with Leigh-Anne Pinnock, 34, Jade Thirlwall, 33, and Perrie Edwards, 32, on The X Factor in 2011.
Their mentor, Tulisa Contostavlos, appears in the documentary. She reflects: “When you want something so bad, you are always blind to the negatives.” After winning The X Factor, Jesy faced online trolling about her appearance. As a result, her mental health suffered.
Jesy later lost weight and returned to the X Factor stage in 2013. However, she continued to receive harsh comments, which led to a near-fatal overdose. In her BBC documentary Jesy Nelson: Odd One Out, she said: “I just remember thinking, ‘I just need this to go away. I’m going to end this.’ I took as many tablets as I could. Then I laid in bed and thought, ‘Let it happen. Hurry up.’”
In December 2020, Jesy confirmed she would leave Little Mix. She said she wanted to focus on things that made her happy. Moreover, she explained that being in the group had affected her mental health.
After leaving, Jesy released solo singles including Boyz, Bad Thing, and Mine. Then, she stepped away from the spotlight. Meanwhile, Little Mix went on hiatus in 2022. The members pursued solo projects.
The documentary also follows Jesy’s high-risk pregnancy. Doctors told Jesy and her ex-fiancé Zion Foster, 27, that their twins had a 5% chance of survival. Footage shows Jesy crying: “I hate that my body is letting me down.” Later, her mother, Janice, added: “If something was to go wrong now, I dread to think what it would be like.”
Jesy has started a campaign for SMA1 screening at birth. She also launched a petition to include the condition in the newborn heel prick test. The documentary follows her weekly hospital visits, conversations with loved ones, and emotional highs and lows.
It also revisits her decision to leave Little Mix. Jesy opens up about fame, mental health struggles, and controversies. Additionally, she says: “We opened the doors fully. I’m looking forward to letting you all in as I navigate becoming a first-time mum. You’ll see all the highs and lows. I hope you join me as I say goodbye to the past and start this new chapter.”
