Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar delivered a powerful speech. He spoke at the UK Labour conference in Liverpool. He fiercely attacked his political rivals. Firstly, he labeled the SNP government as “knackered and out of touch.” This phrase underscored his core criticism of the ruling party in Scotland.
Therefore, Sarwar urged his party colleagues to be more confident. He believes they should proudly trumpet their achievements. The UK Labour government is now fifteen months old. He highlighted several key successes. For example, workers now enjoy new rights. Furthermore, the government has fostered economic stability. Most importantly, he celebrated a major shipbuilding deal. This deal will directly benefit the Clyde.
He specifically mentioned a £10 billion frigate order. The Norwegian navy will receive these new ships. Consequently, this secures fifteen years of work. It also protects thousands of local jobs. Sarwar called it the UK’s largest ever shipbuilding export deal. He represents Glasgow, where the ships will be built. Therefore, he passionately defended this achievement.
However, Sarwar then turned his focus to the SNP. He accused them of profound failure. The UK government provided an extra £5.2 billion. This was a record budget settlement for Scotland. Yet, Sarwar questioned the results. He pointed to severe problems in the Scottish NHS. Over 880,000 Scots are now on waiting lists. Shockingly, Glasgow has more two-year waiters than all of England.
He demanded answers from the Scottish government. “Where has the money gone?” he asked. Moreover, he criticized their record on crime and education. He argued the Scottish NHS cannot survive another decade under the SNP. He concluded the party is truly “knackered and out of touch.” They have simply run out of ideas and energy.
Secondly, Sarwar launched a searing attack on Reform UK. He recalled a recent by-election in Hamilton. There, Reform used a Facebook ad targeting him personally. The ad questioned his identity and loyalties. Sarwar described this as “gutter politics and bile.”
He then directly addressed Reform leader Nigel Farage. Sarwar called him a “poisonous little man.” He stated Farage knows nothing about Scotland. “Scotland is my home,” Sarwar declared. He contrasted his own work for Scotland with Farage’s divisive rhetoric. He confidently predicted Scottish voters will reject Reform.
Finally, Sarwar ended his speech with a message of hope. He said Labour represents ambition and a new direction. Despite some challenging opinion polls, he remains confident. He believes Labour can win the next Scottish election. He urged his party to continue fighting for a positive change.
