Kneecap Glastonbury Investigation Dropped by Police

Must read

Police have confirmed they will take no further action following their investigation into Irish rap group Kneecap’s performance at Glastonbury Festival last month. The Kneecap Glastonbury investigation was dropped. This decision came after prosecutors determined there was insufficient evidence for any charges.

Avon & Somerset Police launched the probe following Kneecap’s June 28 set on the West Holts stage. They performed to a packed crowd. Authorities examined whether comments made during the show about an ongoing court case violated public order laws.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) advised that no realistic prospect of conviction existed, leading to the case being closed. Kneecap shared the police’s decision on Instagram, criticizing the original investigation as unnecessary.

In their social media post, the Belfast trio called their Glastonbury appearance a “celebration of love and solidarity.” They accused media outlets of running “wildly misleading headlines” about their performance.

“Every person who saw our set knew no law was broken,” the group stated. “Yet police publicly announced an investigation without issuing a public apology when dropping it.”

While the Kneecap Glastonbury investigation dropped, police confirmed their separate inquiry into punk duo Bob Vylan’s performance remains ongoing. That case focuses on chants of “death to the IDF” (Israel Defense Forces) during their set, which sparked significant backlash.

Kneecap member Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh recently appeared in court on unrelated charges. This event added to the group’s controversial profile. The rap collective is known for their Irish-language lyrics and anti-establishment themes. They have become a flashpoint in debates about artistic freedom and legal boundaries.

The police stated they had properly notified Kneecap about the case closure. However, the group maintains authorities should have publicized the decision as prominently as the original investigation announcement.
