Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has proposed an ambitious new plan. He wants the UK to actively recruit American scientific talent. Specifically, he is advocating for a major UK Science Talent Drive. This initiative would offer discount visas to US cancer researchers facing funding cuts.
Davey announced the proposal in his keynote speech at the party’s conference. He argued the UK should step into a global leadership vacuum. Consequently, he believes Britain can benefit from another nation’s political decisions. “If Trump won’t back this research, we will,” Davey declared.
The plan directly responds to recent US policy changes. Earlier this year, the Trump administration slashed billions from biomedical research grants. Importantly, these funds often covered critical overhead costs. Subsequently, leading oncologists warned this would devastate cancer research progress.
Therefore, the UK Science Talent Drive would establish a special fellowship scheme. It would welcome US scientists seeking to escape what Davey calls an “anti-science agenda.” Notably, a poll in the ‘Nature’ journal found 75% of its US-based readers were considering moving to Europe or Canada.
The Liberal Democrats have not yet detailed the exact visa discounts. However, current visa costs often exceed £1,000 per person. The party frames this UK Science Talent Drive as a strategic investment. Davey stated it would help the UK lead the world in the fight against cancer.
This policy forms part of a broader political strategy. Davey has intensified his criticisms of Donald Trump and his allies this week. He also accused Reform UK’s Nigel Farage of wanting to imitate “Trump’s America.” Furthermore, Davey condemned Reform members for applauding cuts to mRNA vaccine research.
He called the decision to end twenty-two related research projects “cruel and stupid.” Davey argued that the UK must champion science and compassion. His speech struck a more serious tone compared to previous conferences, reflecting the party’s growth.
The Lib Dems now hold 72 seats after their general election success. This new policy signals their intent to influence national policy on science and innovation. Ultimately, the proposed UK Science Talent Drive aims to position Britain as a global hub for medical research. It also sharply differentiates the Lib Dems from their political rivals on the world stage.
