London Mayor Could Override Council Decisions on Late Night Venues

Must read

The government is set to grant London Mayor Sadiq Khan new powers to override local councils that block pubs, clubs, and music venues from extending their operating hours, as part of a pilot scheme to revive the capital’s struggling nightlife.

Under the plan, Khan could intervene in licensing decisions for venues in areas deemed vital to London’s night-time economy, aiming to cut red tape and boost growth in the hospitality sector. Chancellor Rachel Reeves said the move would help businesses “thrive” rather than be “tied down by unnecessary burdens.”

The initiative comes as London’s nightlife faces mounting challenges from pandemic recovery and Brexit fallout to rising costs, with industry leaders warning of a £3.4 billion hit. Khan, who recently launched a nightlife taskforce, called the powers a chance to “stimulate growth and deliver new jobs,” while Deputy PM Angela Rayner pledged to prioritize venues over “vocal minority” objections.

Westminster Council, home to most of London’s nightlife, cautiously welcomed scrutiny but stressed local authorities should have input. Meanwhile, Conservatives accused Labour of hypocrisy, citing policies like the smoking ban and “recycling tax” as additional burdens on businesses.

If successful, the scheme could expand to other major cities like Manchester and Birmingham.
