London’s Air Quality Improves Following ULEZ Expansion

Must read

A new study has confirmed that air quality in London has significantly improved since the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), with the most deprived areas seeing some of the greatest benefits.

Mayor Sadiq Khan, who faced strong opposition to the 2023 expansion, hailed the findings, stating that the policy has reduced pollution, removed high-emission vehicles from the roads, and provided cleaner air for millions.

“When I was first elected, it was predicted that it would take nearly 200 years to meet legal air quality limits. Now, thanks to our policies, we are close to achieving this goal within the year,” Khan said.

Despite initial legal challenges from outer London councils and criticism following Labour’s byelection loss in Uxbridge and Ruislip, the report—reviewed by an independent advisory group—confirms that ULEZ has accelerated improvements in London’s air quality compared to the rest of the UK.

The study, published by the Greater London Authority, provides the most comprehensive analysis of ULEZ’s impact to date, reinforcing its role in tackling pollution and improving public health.
