Lord Peter Mandelson has had his bail conditions removed after police arrested him on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Mandelson bail lifted comes as the former British ambassador to the US continues to cooperate with authorities.
On Friday, his lawyers confirmed the Metropolitan Police returned his passport. They emphasized that Mandelson does not pose a flight risk. The 72-year-old remains under investigation but can travel freely within the UK.
Police arrested Mandelson on February 23 after alleging he passed sensitive government information to the late convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein while serving as a minister. Authorities acted after House of Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle reported concerns that Mandelson might travel to the British Virgin Islands.
Mandelson’s legal team said police based the detention on a “baseless” claim he intended to take up permanent residence abroad. They criticized the decision to impose bail conditions.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed officers released Mandelson under investigation. The inquiry continues, and the police have not publicly detailed the allegations.
Mishcon de Reya, representing Mandelson, said: “In light of speculation following his arrest last week, the Metropolitan Police have removed all of Peter Mandelson’s bail conditions and returned his passport. Our client does not pose a flight risk and will continue to cooperate with the police investigation. He will not comment further at this stage.”
Sir Lindsay Hoyle confirmed he provided the tip to police. The Met apologized to him for revealing his identity as the source.
The allegations appeared after the US Department of Justice released documents, including emails between Mandelson and Epstein. Mandelson maintains he acted lawfully and had no financial motive.
Mandelson served as the UK ambassador to the US from February 2025 until September 2025. Downing Street removed him after learning new details about his links to Epstein.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has faced scrutiny over Mandelson’s appointment. The controversy also led to the resignation of his chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney.
Mandelson bail lifted allows him to resume his routine while the investigation continues. Authorities continue examining the allegations, and Mandelson and his lawyers insist he is cooperating fully.
The investigation into alleged misconduct remains active, but Mandelson bail lifted shows police trust that he is not a flight risk. The former ambassador will provide further cooperation as required.
