Mummy Sequel News: Fraser and Weisz in Talks

Must read

Mummy sequel news reveals Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly in discussions to reunite. The film is under development at Universal Pictures.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct, while David Coggeshall writes the screenplay. Both directors are known for Ready or Not and the recent Scream films.

Producers attached include franchise veterans Sean Daniel, William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein. Their involvement promises continuity for the project.

The original 1999 film, The Mummy, reimagined Universal’s 1930s horror property as an action-adventure franchise. Fraser played American explorer Rick O’Connell, while Weisz portrayed British Egyptologist Evelyn Carnahan.

Set mostly in 1920s Egypt, the story followed the pair as they battled resurrected ancient forces. Returning cast included John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, and Oded Fehr.

The Mummy became a home-video sensation, selling seven million VHS copies and generating over $1 billion in revenue worldwide.

Fraser and Weisz returned for The Mummy Returns in 2001. That sequel also introduced Dwayne Johnson as the Scorpion King. His spin-off film in 2002 grossed over $180 million globally.

In 2008, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor recast Evelyn with Maria Bello and featured an older Alex O’Connell played by Luke Ford.

According to sources, the new project would act as a direct sequel, ignoring the 2008 film. If confirmed, Fraser would return after 17 years and Weisz after 24.

The original trilogy grossed more than $1.25 billion worldwide. The franchise also inspired theme-park attractions in Hollywood, Orlando, and Singapore.

Universal previously attempted to reboot the franchise in 2017 with Tom Cruise. Despite earning over $409 million, the film was critically panned and plans for a shared “Dark Universe” were abandoned.

The Mummy sequel news arrives as Fraser enjoys a career resurgence following his 2023 Oscar win for The Whale. He previously faced personal challenges and a career hiatus.

Fraser first rose to fame in the early 1990s with Encino Man and School Ties, then became a household name with George of the Jungle and The Mummy trilogy.

Meanwhile, Rachel Weisz has maintained a steady career, winning an Oscar in 2006 for The Constant Gardener. She earned a second nomination for The Favourite in 2019.

Fans await confirmation of Mummy sequel news as production plans and casting details continue to emerge from Universal.
