Netflix has announced the upcoming release of Building the Band, a new talent show featuring One Direction star Liam Payne in one of his final projects before his tragic death last October. Payne, who passed away at the age of 31 following a fall from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, filmed his role as a guest judge for the series alongside music icons Kelly Rowland and Nicole Scherzinger.
The show, set to premiere later this year, follows a unique concept where aspiring singers are kept in separate booths, unable to see each other. Contestants will rely solely on musical compatibility, connection, and chemistry to form a band.
According to the show’s synopsis, Building the Band promises “incredible performances, compelling drama, and one big goal—to find the next great music band.” The Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean will host, with Nicole Scherzinger serving as a mentor and judge. Payne and Rowland will appear as guest judges throughout the series.
This project reunites Payne with Scherzinger, who was a judge on The X Factor when Payne auditioned as a solo act in 2010. She played a key role in grouping him with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson to form the globally successful boy band One Direction.
Building the Band marks a heartfelt addition to Payne’s legacy, celebrating his passion for music and talent development.
