Former Love Island star Olivia Attwood has made her stance clear on Maura Higgins’ recent comments about Pete Wicks, after the Irish reality TV star jokingly suggested her ex was “out cheating” on Valentine’s Day.
Olivia, 33, is standing by her best friend Pete, 36, following Maura’s remark, which came just days after their breakup. Pete and Maura had been close friends for six years before taking their relationship to the next level at the end of last year. However, after spending Christmas and New Year’s together, their romance quickly turned sour, leading to a split before Valentine’s Day.
While Maura spent February 14 with her friends at a lavish dinner and night out, Pete was notably absent. As she left the venue, she was approached by paparazzi who asked about Pete’s whereabouts. In response, Maura quipped, “Dunno. Probably out cheating.”
Pete was reportedly hurt by the comment, and Olivia didn’t take kindly to it either. While attending the BRIT Awards on Saturday night, Olivia took the opportunity to make her own playful dig at the situation. During an interview, Pete joked about his best friend Sam Thompson sitting far away from him at the event, calling Olivia his “work wife.”
“It is a little bit weird because it feels like I am…” Pete began, before Olivia quickly interjected with: “Cheating?” The two then burst into laughter, with Olivia adding, “Not the first time, I might add.” Pete responded with, “Because… I have never done that.”
Following the exchange, Olivia has now defended her comments, making it clear that she does not condone jokes about infidelity. “I’m very protective of my friends. Cheating is not funny. Pete didn’t cheat. That is the joke. Hope that helps,”she stated.
She further clarified, “I appreciate that some people can read between the lines, but a lot of people couldn’t. That’s not something I would find funny at all.”
As tensions between Maura and Pete continue to unfold, it remains to be seen whether the former couple can repair their friendship.
