US Vice-President JD Vance has sparked a diplomatic row after dismissing the potential contribution of foreign troops to a peacekeeping force in Ukraine, referring to them as coming from “some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 30 or 40 years.” The comments have drawn sharp criticism from UK opposition politicians, who accused Vance of disrespecting British forces and undermining international cooperation.
The controversy erupted during a Fox News interview, where Vance argued that a US economic stake in Ukraine’s future would be a “better security guarantee than 20,000 troops from some random country.” While Vance later clarified that he did not specifically mention the UK or France, his remarks were widely interpreted as a slight against nations that have publicly committed to contributing troops to a potential peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.
In a social media post, Vance attempted to clarify his position, stating, “I didn’t even mention the UK or France. Both have fought bravely alongside the US over the last 20 years, and beyond.” However, he added, “There are many countries who are volunteering (privately or publicly) support who have neither the battlefield experience nor the military equipment to do anything meaningful.”
