Peter Navarro, Donald Trump’s top trade adviser, has unleashed a fierce attack on Britain’s government. Navarro called the UK a compliant servant of China, warning that Beijing poses a grave economic threat. His comments have sparked sharp reactions on both sides of the Atlantic.
Navarro accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government of allowing China to gain dangerous influence over Britain. He claimed China is ready to “suck the UK’s blood dry” if the U.S. blocks Chinese goods. Speaking to a UK newspaper, Navarro warned that Britain and the EU could become dumping grounds for excess Chinese products.
However, sources close to the Trump administration called Navarro’s views extreme. One adviser told reporters, “Navarro is crazy and seen as a dangerous influence on the president.” Despite Navarro’s harsh words, Donald Trump has remained publicly positive about his relationship with Starmer.
Still, the UK faces tough U.S. tariffs. British exports to the U.S. now carry a 10% basic charge, while auto products face a 25% tariff. Vice President JD Vance and close Trump ally Elon Musk have also criticized Britain, claiming the country is losing free speech. The tension has raised fears that a UK-U.S. trade deal could stall.
Navarro’s concerns extend to British officials’ ties with China. Lord Mandelson, the UK’s ambassador to the U.S., almost had his credentials blocked because of past business connections with Beijing. Navarro insists the compliant servant of China label fits Britain’s pattern of accepting China’s soft power gifts and influence.
He argues that as the U.S. pushes back against unfair Chinese trade practices, Europe and Britain must stay alert. “The UK and EU need vigilance to avoid becoming China’s dumping grounds,” he said. He emphasized that the compliant servant of China approach could leave Britain vulnerable.
As U.S.-UK tensions rise over trade, tariffs, and China policy, political observers warn that relations could worsen in the months ahead.
