The Post Office Horizon scandal has caused unimaginable harm to hundreds of innocent people. According to the first official inquiry report, victims faced financial ruin, mental health crises, and even suicide attempts.
Sir Wyn Williams, leading the inquiry, revealed the devastating impact. At least 59 victims considered suicide, while 10 actually attempted it. Tragically, over 13 people may have taken their own lives due to the scandal.
Many victims suffered long-term consequences. Some turned to alcohol to cope, while others faced broken marriages and severe depression. One postmistress even entered rehab for eight months due to stress-induced drinking.
The report criticized the slow and complicated compensation process. Currently, three different schemes exist, causing confusion and delays. Sir Wyn urged the government to clarify what “full and fair financial redress” truly means.
Shockingly, legal costs for handling claims have already reached £100 million. Law firm Herbert Smith Freehills alone received £67 million for their work. Campaigners argue this money should go directly to victims instead.
The inquiry made several key recommendations:

- Compensation for victims’ families
- Direct meetings between victims, Fujitsu, and the Post Office
Post Office minister Gareth Thomas confirmed that some family members may now receive compensation. However, they must provide written proof of their suffering.
While this report focused on victims’ suffering, future findings will address who is responsible. Sir Wyn confirmed that Post Office and Fujitsu staff knew about software flaws. Yet, they failed to act, leading to wrongful prosecutions. The government must respond to these findings by October 2025. Meanwhile, victims continue demanding justice.
Campaigner Jo Hamilton called the legal costs “mad.” She argued that millions spent on lawyers should instead help victims rebuild their lives. The Post Office Horizon scandal remains one of the UK’s worst miscarriages of justice. With more victims still coming forward, the fight for accountability is far from over.
