Saoirse Ronan is one of the hot favorites to take home the Best Actress award at the 78th EE British Academy Film Awards tonight. Whether she wins or not, the Irish actress has never been more content, firmly securing her place as one of the most talented and respected actresses of her generation.
As she steps onto the red carpet, few would argue that Saoirse doesn’t deserve her spot among the best. With a career that started in childhood and has continuously flourished, she holds more nominations and awards than any other actress her age. Her extensive body of work includes critically acclaimed films that showcase her exceptional range and talent.
Saoirse made her film debut in “I Could Never Be Your Woman” in 2007, but it was her role as Briony Tallis in “Atonement” that catapulted her into the spotlight, earning her BAFTA and Oscar nominations at just 13 years old. Since then, she has accumulated seven BAFTA nominations, four Academy Award nominations, and a Golden Globewin for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her role in “Lady Bird”.
Despite her monumental success, Saoirse remains grounded and prefers to keep a low profile. She was born in The Bronx, New York City in 1994 to Irish parents, Monica and Paul Ronan, and moved to Ardattin, County Carlow, Ireland at the age of three. She was mostly homeschooled and maintains a close bond with her parents.
Reflecting on her relationship with her mother, Saoirse once shared, “We’ve always been very, very close. When I moved to London and felt homesick, she helped me find the courage to keep going. She’s my best friend.”
Saoirse’s father, Paul Ronan, recognized her talent early on. He recalled, “From the age of two, I spotted something in her. She was an amazing kid, very friendly and sociable. Eventually, when she was seven or eight, I put her in a short film I was doing. They needed a kid, and I said: ‘I’ve got one.’”
Her big break came when she starred alongside her father in RTÉ’s The Clinic and later secured a role in the mini-series Proof. Thaddeus O’Sullivan, the director of Proof, recognized her extraordinary potential even at the age of ten, describing her as “very gentle, self-assured, and highly intelligent. It was obvious she was a star.”
Today, Saoirse Ronan is celebrated not just for her exceptional acting skills but also for her authenticity and humility. As she awaits the outcome of the BAFTAs, one thing is clear—her star continues to shine brightly.
