Sir Elton John has revealed the emotional toll that his ongoing sight loss has had on both him and his family, describing the experience as “distressing” and life-altering. In a newly released interview, the 78-year-old music legend shared how his deteriorating vision has affected his day-to-day life and his ability to enjoy precious moments with his children.
The iconic singer-songwriter first disclosed his sight issues last year, announcing he had lost vision in his right eye following an infection. He has now confirmed that the condition has not improved and that his left eye isn’t much better. “I can see you, but I can’t see TV, I can’t read,” he said in a candid conversation with The Times. “I can’t see my boys playing rugby and soccer, and it has been a very stressful time because I’m used to soaking it all up.”
Sir Elton shares two sons, Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12, with husband David Furnish. Reflecting on his inability to watch them grow and play sports, he admitted the loss has been deeply emotional. “You get emotional, but you have to get used to it because I’m lucky to have the life I have,” he said, expressing gratitude for his “wonderful” family and the support they continue to provide.
Despite the challenges, the Oscar-winning performer remains resilient, telling himself to “just get on with it,” as he adapts to a new reality of limited vision. He acknowledged that although the situation is difficult, he still retains some sight in his left eye, and he’s focusing on remaining positive.
