Sir Michael Caine, the iconic actor now aged 91, has revealed an unexpected gardening experience that played a pivotal role in his decision to leave Hollywood behind. The legendary actor, known for his remarkable career spanning over six decades, shared that his love for gardening ultimately convinced him to return to Britain.
Caine, who spent years cultivating beautiful gardens at his homes in Oxfordshire and Surrey, recalled his time living in Los Angeles back in 2023. During his stay, he encountered an unusual challenge when trying to grow his favourite flowers—daffodils. In the UK, daffodils bloom naturally in the spring, but in the warmer climate of Los Angeles, the process required an artificial twist.
“I was told that if I wanted to grow daffodils, I’d need to put the bulbs in the fridge for a fortnight,” Caine revealed. “That was it – final straw!” The idea of refrigerating bulbs to mimic winter conditions seemed absurd to the actor, who grew up in a country where daffodils flourish effortlessly. Despite his initial skepticism, he tried the method, and to his surprise, it worked. However, the experience solidified his yearning for the familiar seasons of Britain.
This revelation was one of several factors that prompted Caine to sell his California home and settle back in the UK. Now residing in London’s Chelsea Harbour, Caine continues to indulge his passion for gardening, a love he developed as a child after being evacuated to the countryside during World War II.
