Starmer Condemns Israeli Airstrike on Qatar, Denies Prior Knowledge

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has strongly condemned Israel’s recent military strike. The airstrike targeted senior Hamas leadership in Qatar’s capital, Doha. Consequently, Starmer called this action a clear violation of Qatar’s sovereignty. He also warned it risks further dangerous escalation across the region.

Downing Street quickly denied any prior knowledge of the attack. A spokesperson confirmed the operation was entirely independent. This stance contrasts with the United States. White House officials stated they received advance notification of the strike.

Starmer reiterated his government’s consistent position. He emphasized the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire. Furthermore, he demanded the release of all hostages held by Hamas. Finally, he called for a massive surge in humanitarian aid into Gaza. He stated these are the only steps toward lasting peace.

The Prime Minister held a phone call with Qatar’s Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. During this conversation, Starmer repeated his condemnation of the strike. He offered his condolences for the death of a Qatari security officer. He also thanked Qatar for its indispensable role in mediating ceasefire talks.

This diplomatic incident occurs just before a planned meeting. Israeli President Isaac Herzog is scheduled to visit Downing Street. Starmer intends to discuss the strike and the Gaza humanitarian crisis. The government defends this engagement. Officials argue dialogue is essential for achieving a ceasefire.

However, the meeting faces significant political opposition. Sixty MPs and peers have urged the government to deny Herzog entry. They worry about complicity in genocide under international law. Herzog has previously made controversial statements about collective Palestinian responsibility.

The International Court of Justice referenced one such statement. It was included in a finding that Palestinians faced an imminent risk of genocide. Herzog claims the court misrepresented his comments. This visit marks the first by a senior Israeli leader since spring.

Starmer last met Herzog over a year ago in Paris. The upcoming talks will undoubtedly be tense and highly scrutinized. The UK government continues to walk a delicate diplomatic tightrope in the Middle East.
