Keir Starmer Calls for Closer UK-EU Partnership to Safeguard National Interests

Must read

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK’s long-term national interest requires a closer EU partnership. He emphasized the importance of working with European allies amid global volatility.

During a press conference, Starmer outlined government measures to help households with the cost of living. However, he warned that future challenges will not be easy.

He added that the government will continue to protect British interests while guiding the country through international uncertainty. Moreover, Starmer stressed that a closer EU partnership is increasingly necessary.

When asked about President Donald Trump’s NATO threats, Starmer called them “noise” and said he will act in the UK’s national interest. He explained that he refuses to change his stance on the Middle East conflict.

Starmer clarified that the UK remains fully committed to NATO. At the same time, he highlighted that a closer EU partnership strengthens defense, security, and economic planning. Furthermore, he noted that it could reinforce the UK’s relationship with the United States.

He insisted that aligning more closely with Europe allows the UK to improve interoperability in defense projects. For example, joint naval operations with Norway demonstrate how cooperation can create jobs and strengthen trade.

Starmer said that the UK remains open to negotiating further alignment with the EU single market. However, he emphasized that this does not equate to rejoining the customs union. Instead, it focuses on closer regulatory and economic cooperation.

He promised that a summit with EU leaders later this year will pursue more ambitious cooperation. This includes economic collaboration, defense, and energy planning. Starmer stressed the importance of shared values, interests, and long-term security.

On domestic issues, he highlighted energy support measures and reassured the public that fuel duty remains frozen until September. He said contingency plans are in place for potential autumn energy challenges, which depend on the Middle East situation.

Starmer concluded that international de-escalation and stronger ties with European partners will protect the UK economy and national security. He repeated that a closer EU partnership remains central to Britain’s future strategy.
