Gorton and Denton By-Election Battle Heats Up

Must read

The Gorton and Denton by-election has intensified as Labour fights to retain the Greater Manchester seat. The contest now poses a serious test for Keir Starmer and his leadership.

During a campaign visit, Starmer sharply criticised both Reform UK and the Green Party of England and Wales. He framed the race as a direct battle of values. Moreover, he warned voters against splitting support on the left.

Labour secured the constituency in 2024 with a majority of 13,413 votes. However, declining poll ratings have tightened the race. Consequently, party strategists now treat Gorton and Denton as highly competitive.

Starmer argued that a vote for the Greens could benefit Reform. He referenced a previous by-election loss in Runcorn, where Reform gained a parliamentary seat. Therefore, he urged progressive voters to unite behind Labour.

Reform has selected commentator Matt Goodwin as its candidate. Meanwhile, party leader Nigel Farage continues to target traditional Labour strongholds. Starmer described Reform’s message as divisive and harmful to communities.

In addition, the Prime Minister attacked the Greens over drug policy. He criticised proposals to legalise and regulate controlled substances. As a father, he said he found the idea unacceptable.

Green co-leader Zack Polanski has promoted a public health approach to drug reform. However, Labour argues that such policies would risk public safety.

Starmer appeared alongside deputy leader Lucy Powell and Labour candidate Angeliki Stogia. Furthermore, he met Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham during the visit. Sources suggested both men stressed party unity.

Notably, Starmer skipped campaigning during last year’s Runcorn contest. This time, however, he has taken a more visible role. Allies say that decision reflects the stakes in Gorton and Denton.

Speaking to broadcasters, Starmer described the by-election as a defining moment. He said Labour stands for unity and hope. In contrast, he accused Reform of promoting division.

As polling day approaches, all parties have intensified ground operations. Turnout will likely determine the outcome. For now, Gorton and Denton remains one of the most closely watched political contests of the year.
