Prime Minister Keir Starmer will hold a press conference today following an emergency COBRA meeting. He will provide an update on the escalating US-Israel war with Iran.
The briefing is set for 10 a.m. and will focus on how the government is supporting households. Energy prices have soared, and cost-of-living pressures are rising.
The conflict, now in its fifth week, has disrupted global oil markets. Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz also threatens fertiliser shipments. This could affect food supply chains. Downing Street reassures the public that petrol remains available.
Starmer said he is working closely with international allies to push for de-escalation in the Middle East. He added that easing the conflict is the fastest way to reduce domestic price pressures.
The Prime Minister’s statement follows comments from US President Donald Trump. Trump told Britain and other allies to “go get your own oil.” He claimed the US had done the “hard part” and said allies must manage the situation themselves.
Starmer told reporters: “It is my government’s duty to protect the British people at home and abroad. We understand public concern about the Iran conflict and its impact on families.”
He also highlighted measures to help households. These include a £117 reduction in the energy price cap, a boost to the national minimum wage, and a freeze on prescription costs.
“Millions of people will see energy bills fall, wages rise, and more support become available because of these decisions,” Starmer said. “However, we must go further. Diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz remain central to reducing costs.”
During the briefing, Starmer is expected to answer questions about both international and domestic impacts of the conflict.
