The UK’s largest teaching union has warned it will rally against Labour MPs and potentially strike if the government fails to deliver a fully funded, above-inflation pay rise for teachers in England.
Daniel Kebede, General Secretary of the National Education Union (NEU), told members at their conference in Harrogate that they “expect better from a Labour government” than the current 2.8% pay proposal. He vowed the union would campaign in Labour constituencies and “stand ready to strike” if demands are not met.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson dismissed the threat, calling potential strikes “indefensible.” The government insists schools should cover the pay increase through “efficiencies,” but the NEU has agreed to ballot for strike action if no improved offer or additional funding is provided.
