Tighter Gun Restrictions Bring Hope After Family Tragedy

New UK gun laws have taken effect, marking a significant step toward preventing firearm-related tragedies. Tighter gun restrictions now require stricter background checks, additional references, and mandatory interviews with household members. For Emma Ambler, whose twin sister and two nieces were killed by a legally held shotgun in 2020, these changes bring long-awaited hope.

Emma Ambler has fought for tighter gun restrictions since her sister, Kelly Fitzgibbons, and nieces, Ava and Lexi Needham, were murdered in West Sussex. Their killer Kelly’s partner had legally obtained the weapon despite a history of depression and dishonesty on his application. Now, new rules aim to close such loopholes.

Under the tighter gun restrictions, applicants must now provide two references instead of one. Referees must have known them for at least two years and confirm their suitability. Police must also interview partners and household members to uncover any risks, such as domestic abuse or violent tendencies.

Additionally, dishonesty on applications like hiding criminal records or mental health struggles will now disqualify applicants. Policing Minister Dame Diana Johnson stated, “Only those meeting the highest safety standards should access firearms.”

The reforms follow several high-profile shootings, including the 2021 Plymouth massacre, where a gunman killed five before turning the weapon on himself. A coroner’s report exposed flaws in the licensing system, prompting these updates.

Jess Phillips, Minister for Safeguarding, worked closely with Ambler on the reforms. “Now, lying on an application will count against you—something that should’ve always been the case.” The government plans further action, including a consultation on private firearm sales and online purchases.

For Ambler, the fight continues. “No family should suffer like mine did,” she said. “If these changes save even one life, they’re worth it.” While the tighter gun restrictions won’t erase past pain, they offer hope for a safer future.
