UK Military Bases: Cyprus Seeks Security Talks

Must read

Cyprus is moving to review security arrangements for UK military bases following Iranian drone strikes. UK military bases, including RAF Akrotiri, were targeted at the start of the Iran war, prompting concerns about local security. Consequently, Cyprus wants updated agreements to ensure safety for residents living near the bases.

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides raised the matter during a call with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. He pledged an “open and frank discussion” with the UK government over future arrangements. Christodoulides described the bases as a “colonial consequence” and stressed the government’s responsibility to roughly 10,000 Cypriot citizens living within the bases.

During the call, he clarified that Cyprus would not demand the UK give up the bases entirely. Instead, officials aim to modernize security arrangements while maintaining oversight for residents. Meanwhile, a UK Ministry of Defence spokesperson said the status of the bases is not negotiable. They emphasized the “long-standing friendship” between the UK and Cyprus remains strong.

In response to the drone attack, Britain deployed the warship HMS Dragon to the region. Although the vessel arrived nearly three weeks after its initial announcement, officials stressed the need for ongoing regional security. In addition, the UK continues to lead efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil shipping route currently blocked by Iranian forces.

The blockade has driven global oil prices above $100 per barrel. Shell CEO Wael Sawan warned that Europe could face energy shortages if the strait remains closed. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has repeatedly called for international involvement to secure the route. The UK, alongside partners including Saudi Arabia, is exploring a plan to ensure the safe flow of goods through the strait.

Christodoulides insisted that discussions with the UK will remain private. He said Cyprus has a “clear approach” regarding the future of the bases, but he declined to negotiate in public. Analysts suggest the talks could result in updated agreements without affecting UK sovereignty over the bases.

As tensions escalate in the Middle East, UK military bases in Cyprus remain central to regional strategy. Consequently, discussions with Cyprus could shape future operations while protecting both British personnel and Cypriot residents.
