Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the UK’s focus must remain on Ukraine. He made the remarks while welcoming Zelenskyy to Downing Street.
Starmer reaffirmed Britain’s support for Kyiv, declaring that “our resolve is unbreakable.” He stressed that while the conflict in Iran continues, the UK cannot lose focus on Ukraine.
He said that Russia should not benefit from instability in the Middle East, whether through oil price spikes or the easing of sanctions. Consequently, Starmer emphasised that Ukraine must remain the main priority.
Zelenskyy thanked the UK for standing with Ukraine throughout the winter. He said he would update Starmer on developments on the battlefield and on energy security.
Moreover, Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of diplomacy. He stressed the need to continue negotiations with the United States and Russia, despite the challenges presented by the Iran war.
The Ukrainian president also acknowledged that the conflict in Iran affects both Ukraine and Europe. Therefore, he called for coordinated efforts to address the wider geopolitical risks.
Earlier, King Charles met Zelenskyy at Buckingham Palace. They greeted each other warmly in the first-floor drawing room. Afterwards, the president took tea with the monarch in his private study.
Charles reiterated his January remarks praising Ukrainian resilience and strength. He also expressed hope for a just and lasting peace, underscoring Britain’s continued support for Ukraine.
Starmer is expected to attend Zelenskyy’s speech alongside about 60 MPs and peers. Defence Secretary John Healey, opposition leaders, and NATO chief Mark Rutte will also be present.
The meeting highlights the UK’s commitment to maintaining military, diplomatic, and economic support for Ukraine. Furthermore, it signals that London aims to balance attention to the Iran conflict without diverting resources from Kyiv.
Overall, both leaders stressed that strategic focus on Ukraine remains essential. They called for unity among allies to ensure security, support, and long-term stability in Eastern Europe.
