UK Deploys 1,000 Troops to Gulf Amid Rising Iran Tensions

Must read

The UK has deployed more troops to the Gulf as tensions with Iran escalate. As a result, the total deployment now reaches 1,000 personnel.

In addition, UK Gulf troops will include Typhoon jets sent to Qatar. Furthermore, the Sky Sabre missile system will move to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Defence Secretary John Healey said the deployment responds to an “expanding threat” from Iran. Consequently, he condemned Tehran’s attacks on the region.

Healey emphasized that UK Gulf troops operate only in a defensive role. He insisted Britain will not join offensive actions. Earlier, US President Donald Trump criticized Britain for refusing to take part in attacks on Iran. He said allies must “learn to fight for yourself.”

However, Healey rejected Trump’s call. He said the UK must protect its people and defend regional allies. Additionally, he added that Gulf leaders “judge us by our actions, not words.” UK Gulf troops will reinforce existing UK bases and those of its allies. They will also provide air defence against drones and missiles targeting critical infrastructure.

During his tour, Healey revealed that Iranian drones now threaten universities, steelworks, and aluminium plants in the Gulf. Therefore, he coordinated urgently with Gulf partners. Moreover, Healey met two kings, two prime ministers, and three defence secretaries. In all meetings, talks focused on securing safe shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

He stressed that reopening the strait requires international cooperation, not just military solutions. Allies must work alongside the US to ensure safe passage for cargo ships. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the Sky Sabre system includes radars, missile launchers, and operators from the Royal Artillery. Consequently, it will integrate with Saudi air defences this week.

In January, the RAF deployed a joint Typhoon squadron with Qatar. After US and Israeli strikes on Iran, Starmer approved sending four more jets to the region. Therefore, UK Gulf troops demonstrate Britain’s commitment to regional security. Their presence reassures Gulf partners while defending British and allied interests.

Healey concluded that the UK remains vigilant. “We will help our allies protect the skies and maintain stability in a volatile region,” he said.
