UK to Take Calm Approach to US Tariffs, PM Starmer Says

The UK will respond to anticipated US trade tariffs with a measured approach rather than a “knee-jerk reaction,” Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has stated. The comments come ahead of an expected announcement by US President Donald Trump on sweeping import taxes, which could impact British goods.

Despite failing to secure an exemption so far, Sir Keir revealed that negotiations to potentially overturn the tariffs are at an “advanced stage.” During a cabinet meeting, he emphasized keeping “all options on the table” to address the economic risks, including potential increases in the cost of living.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves acknowledged that global tariffs would affect the UK as an open trading economy but stressed that a deal could help mitigate the impact. Trump had previously hinted at exemptions for certain nations but recently indicated that the tariffs would apply universally, dubbing the announcement “Liberation Day.”

Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds expressed confidence in the UK’s position, stating that the country is in the “best possible position of any country” to reverse the tariffs. He noted that negotiations, which typically take years, had progressed rapidly, with a potential framework already in place.

Meanwhile, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch cautioned against retaliatory tariffs, warning that such measures would only burden British consumers. Instead, she urged the government to prioritize securing a US trade deal swiftly.
