Unite Union’s £30m Scandal Ex-Boss McCluskey Accused of Luxury Perks and Contract Mismanagement

Must read

The Unite union’s £30m scandal has taken a dramatic turn after an internal report exposed ex-leader Len McCluskey’s lavish perks. According to findings, McCluskey allegedly enjoyed private jet flights and football tickets arranged by a construction firm linked to the union’s Birmingham hotel project.

Investigators revealed that McCluskey flew on a private jet to watch Liverpool FC in Champions League finals. The Falcon 900B jet, offering leather seats and a full-size bed, reportedly cost up to £47,500 per trip. Additionally, he received tickets to multiple Liverpool matches, some with hospitality perks.

McCluskey’s lawyers denied wrongdoing, stating he paid for his own travel. However, Unite’s report claims there is “no indication” he reimbursed the Flanagan Group, the firm behind the flights.

The Unite union’s £30m scandal centers on the Eastside Rooms hotel, originally estimated at £7m. Final costs ballooned to £125m, while the property is now valued at just £38m. The Flanagan Group, run by McCluskey’s friends, allegedly overcharged Unite by at least £30m. The firm also claimed £3.7m for weather delays, despite contract terms excluding such payments.

Unite’s report found McCluskey “overruled” staff and legal advice to sign the Flanagan contract. No competitive tendering process took place, even though the firm had a history of delays and cost overruns. His lawyers said he doesn’t recall the emails but would have acted if true.

Current Unite boss Sharon Graham called the findings “astounding.” She has launched legal efforts to recover funds, saying, “This is members’ money—I expect it back.” Graham also introduced stricter financial controls to prevent future abuses.

The Unite union’s £30m scandal continues as the Serious Fraud Office investigates. Meanwhile, McCluskey denies all allegations, insisting he acted properly. The Flanagan Group has not commented despite repeated requests.

With millions at stake, Unite’s leadership vows full transparency. Graham added, “I’ve uncovered this, and I’ll ensure it never happens again.” The fallout may reshape union governance for years to come.
