Vibrant Parliamentary Debate Needed Stormont Speaker Criticizes Scripted Politics

Must read

Stormont Speaker Edwin Poots has raised concerns over the declining quality of debate in the Northern Ireland Assembly. He suggests that if discussions remain one-sided and pre-scripted, MLAs might as well “do it by email.” His remarks highlight the need for a vibrant parliamentary debate. Real engagement, rather than performative speeches, should take center stage.

In a letter to all MLAs, Poots emphasized that while passionate argument is essential, true debate requires listening and responding. It’s not just about delivering rehearsed lines. He pointed out that many members now focus solely on stating their views without meaningful interaction. This approach turns the chamber into little more than a stage for social media clips.

“Proper debate is about both having the opportunity to state your own views and listening” he wrote. Responding to and challenging others is equally important. Without this dynamic, he warned, the Assembly risks becoming irrelevant.

Reflecting on his time at Stormont, Poots praised past leaders who balanced fierce advocacy with respect for opponents. These “political giants,” he noted, understood that robust debate means “giving as good as you can take.” This standard, he believes, is fading.

His comments come after his own controversial remark last year about TUV leader Jim Allister, which critics called inflammatory. Now, Poots is urging MLAs to uphold civility while still engaging in rigorous discussion.

In 2021, former Speaker Alex Maskey outlined Ten Practical Principles of Debate. Poots has expanded these guidelines, stressing not just decorum but the importance of a vibrant parliamentary debate culture. His message is clear: if MLAs want to restore public trust, they must move beyond scripted statements. They need to embrace real, challenging dialogue.

As Northern Ireland’s politics evolves, the question remains: Will MLAs rise to the occasion? Or will debates continue to feel like exchanges that could have just been emailed? The future of Stormont’s credibility may depend on the answer.
