The government has announced new measures to stop housing benefit payments from reaching landlords who fail to maintain proper property standards.
Local authorities will soon have the power to withhold payments from landlords who violate housing regulations or provide substandard living conditions. The initiative includes creating a national database of rogue landlords and implementing mandatory property inspections before benefit payments can begin.
“These reforms will protect vulnerable tenants and ensure taxpayers’ money isn’t rewarding negligent landlords,” said the Housing Minister. The new regulations are expected to be implemented by year-end.
