Energy Bill Relief Expands to Millions More UK Households This Winter

Must read

Energy bill relief is coming to millions more Britons this winter. The government has expanded the Warm Home Discount scheme, allowing an extra 2.7 million households to claim £150 off their energy costs. Previously, only those on pension credit or means-tested benefits in high-energy-scoring homes qualified. Now, property size and energy efficiency ratings no longer matter.

Nearly a million families with children will now receive energy bill relief. Debt charities and energy groups have praised the move but argue it still excludes some vulnerable groups. People on non-means-tested benefits, for example, remain ineligible. Simon Francis of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition warns bills are still much higher than in 2020. He says many will still struggle with unaffordable costs this winter.

Energy companies fund and distribute the £150 discount. The government, however, sets the eligibility criteria. Since the rules have loosened, more low-income households will automatically see the deduction on their bills. This change follows another recent reversal—reinstating Winter Fuel Payments for most pensioners.

The expansion’s cost may slightly increase standing charges for all customers. Energy firms could pass the expense onto consumers. However, the government insists savings from reduced company spending and better debt management will offset any hikes. Standing charges recently dropped due to stricter rules on what suppliers can charge.

Despite recent cuts, analysts predict another rise in October due to higher oil and gas prices. Energy UK’s Dhara Vyas supports the expansion but urges faster action on long-term support schemes. Meanwhile, Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed £13.2bn for the Warm Homes Plan to improve energy efficiency.

Energy bill relief is a critical lifeline, yet many argue more must be done. With winter approaching, millions still face tough choices between heating and eating. The expanded discount helps, but campaigners say deeper solutions are needed.
