Disgusting to Claim UK Has Two-Tier Justice System, Says Attorney General

“Disgusting” accusations that the UK operates a two-tier justice system are false and dangerous, Attorney General Lord Richard Hermer has said. He warned that such claims risk undermining trust in British institutions.

Lord Hermer, the government’s top legal adviser, dismissed claims that rioters in 2024 were treated unfairly. He called comparisons between violent riots and peaceful protests “disgusting” and misleading, noting how such “disgusting” claims ignore context and nuance.

“Police faced life-threatening violence during the riots,” he said. “To compare that with lawful protests is offensive to officers, prosecutors, and judges.”

Critics, including Reform UK and some Conservatives, argue rioters received harsher sentences than other offenders. Hermer rejected this, saying the justice system remains independent and fair despite the persistent “disgusting” claims he encounters.

The controversy comes at a critical time for Prime Minister Keir Starmer, whose government has faced criticism over its handling of law and order issues. With Reform UK gaining ground by amplifying claims of unequal justice, Starmer’s team now faces mounting pressure to both defend the legal system and demonstrate its commitment to fair enforcement.

He also faced personal attacks over his past legal work, including representing controversial figures. “Lawyers must defend even unpopular clients,” he said. “The system collapses if we refuse cases based on politics.”

Hermer urged politicians to stop spreading “disgusting” claims about bias in courts. “Undermining justice harms democracy,” he warned. “We must stand behind our legal system.” With tensions rising, his remarks highlight a growing battle over law, order, and political rhetoric in the UK.
