French Taxi Driver Charged with Theft in Lammy Holiday Dispute

A French taxi driver has been charged with theft after allegedly stealing luggage and cash from UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and his wife Nicola Green. The incident with the French taxi driver occurred during a private holiday following a state visit to Italy with King Charles and Queen Camilla.

The couple had booked a 360-mile journey from Forli, Italy, to the French ski resort of Flaine. The French taxi driver, however, claimed he was owed €700 (£590) in cash for a segment not covered by an upfront payment. The Foreign Office insists the fare was fully paid before the journey began.

The situation escalated when the driver argued with Ms Green, then drove off with their luggage. The French taxi driver later brought the bags to a police station and filed a complaint. When the couple contacted the station, they found money missing from one of Ms Green’s bags. She promptly gave a statement to officers.

Bonneville prosecutor Boris Duffau confirmed that the driver has been charged with theft. He will appear in court on 3 November 2025. Duffau stated that French police investigated the French taxi driver incident and concluded the driver unlawfully took both cash and belongings.

An official investigation began as a commercial dispute. However, prosecutors say it now qualifies as theft against Lammy and Green.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office clarified several key points. Lammy was travelling on a personal passport. No sensitive documents or devices were in the vehicle. The booking was handled privately through getTransfer.com.

The FCDO stated: “The fare was paid in full. The foreign secretary and his wife are named as victims in this matter. The French taxi driver has been charged with theft. As the legal process continues, we will not comment further.”

Sources confirmed the Lammys paid for the trip personally and made arrangements independently. The ski resort stay followed three days of official engagements in Rome.

The case continues as French authorities prepare for the French taxi driver’s court appearance.
