A plant-based restaurant in London has become the first in the UK to receive a prestigious Michelin star, marking a significant milestone for the vegan dining scene.

The establishment, located on Old Street, impressed Michelin judges with its fully plant-based menu. Head chef Kirk Haworth was praised for his ability to blend classical culinary techniques with innovative vegan adaptations.

The accolade was announced during the annual Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland ceremony, held in Glasgow. Speaking at the event, Haworth emphasized his approach to food, stating: “It’s just about flavour, that’s all it’s about. Flavour, excitement, innovation, and trying to take it to a new space of deliciousness.”

The recognition comes amid a rise in plant-based diets across the UK. Research conducted last year estimated that the number of vegans in the country grew by 1.1 million between 2023 and 2024, bringing the total to 2.5 million, or 4.7% of the adult population.

A total of 26 restaurants were honoured at the ceremony. Among the top winners was a modern European restaurant in the village of Aughton, near Liverpool, which became only the 10th restaurant in the UK and Ireland to receive the coveted three Michelin stars. The venue, which opened in 2017, earned its first two stars in the years following its launch.

Michelin inspectors praised the restaurant’s dedication to excellence, stating: “The ingredients, many sourced from the kitchen garden, are outstanding. The chefs’ culinary technique is hugely impressive, with a remarkable balance of simplicity and complexity in their dishes.”

Expressing his gratitude, head chef Mark Birchall said: “You dream about these things, you almost act it out in your mind, but the emotion is incredible.”

In total, 22 new restaurants were awarded their first Michelin star, including nine in London, three in Ireland, and two in Scotland. A Cardiff-based restaurant also made history by becoming the first in the Welsh capital to earn the distinction.

A Greek restaurant in Borough Market received its first star after previously winning an award for Best Opening of the Year.

This year’s ceremony also saw five Green Stars awarded to restaurants demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability. The event marked the 125th anniversary of the Michelin Guide.
