Broxtowe Borough Council has been thrown into political uncertainty after 20 councillors resigned from the Labour Party on 2 January, announcing plans to form an independent group, the Broxtowe Independents. Deputy leader Greg Marshall confirmed the resignations, stating that administrative changes were underway.
The councillors cited frustration with Labour’s direction under Sir Keir Starmer, criticizing policies such as cuts to the winter fuel allowance for some pensioners. They also claimed 10 members had been blocked from standing in the upcoming Nottinghamshire County Council elections—an accusation Labour denies, insisting that all candidates had the opportunity to apply through the usual process.
Labour has accused the defectors of creating “political chaos” and misleading residents, noting that they were still listed as Labour members on the council’s website. The party also criticized the group for failing to clarify whether they would govern as a minority administration or align with other independents, warning that the uncertainty could disrupt vital services.
On Friday, Labour called for an extraordinary council meeting to establish clarity on the council’s leadership ahead of the next full meeting on 5 March.
