A major incident has been declared as more than 100 firefighters and 14 fire appliances tackle a large wildfire near the Mourne Mountains in County Down.
The blaze, which spans around two miles along Sandbank Road in Hilltown, is affecting forestry and is dangerously close to nearby properties. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) said a small number of residents were asked to evacuate overnight as a precaution.
NIFRS Group Commander Ross Toland said crews are “working very hard in tough conditions to protect the properties closest to the fire,” with operations expected to continue into Sunday.
An amber wildfire warning remains in place this weekend, with authorities urging the public to avoid the area. The Hilltown to Rostrevor Road and Sandbank Road were briefly closed but have since reopened.
