Reform UK MP Sarah Pochin has sparked a diversity controversy after criticizing TV adverts featuring ethnic minorities.
The MP for Runcorn and Helsby said it frustrates her to “see adverts full of black people, full of Asian people.” She added that “your average white family is not represented any more.”
Pochin later apologized, stating her comments were “phrased poorly” but appeared to maintain the overall sentiment. She claimed her concern was that the advertising industry had gone “DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) mad.”
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage described Pochin’s remarks as “ugly” but stopped short of calling them racist. He suggested her comments should be considered in the context of “DEI madness.”
At a press conference, Farage said: “I am unhappy with what she has done. I understand the point, but her wording was wrong. If I thought the intention behind it was racist, I would have acted more strongly.”
Prime Minister Keir Starmer sharply criticized the comments and Farage’s response, calling it “shocking racism” and highlighting a lack of leadership. He said: “Nigel Farage has questions to answer. He either does not see this as racist or he has failed to act decisively.”
Starmer stressed that the UK is a tolerant, diverse country and leaders must call out racism wherever it appears. “This sort of remark can tear the country apart,” he said.
In her follow-up statement, Pochin clarified her focus on the advertising sector, not any ethnic group. She said: “I apologize for any offense caused, which was not my intention. I will ensure my language is more accurate going forward.”
The diversity controversy has drawn widespread attention from politicians, media outlets, and advocacy groups. Many have called for clearer guidance on how DEI principles are communicated publicly.
Opponents of Pochin’s remarks argue that public figures must exercise care when discussing race and representation. Meanwhile, supporters have suggested she was critiquing industry trends rather than specific communities.
As the debate continues, Reform UK faces pressure to respond and clarify its stance. Pochin’s comments have reignited discussions about diversity, inclusion, and freedom of expression in British media.
The diversity controversy shows how statements from MPs can rapidly escalate into national political debates and test party leadership.
