Queen Reading Mission has taken on new urgency as Queen Camilla warns that reading rates continue to fall sharply. The Queen marked the fifth anniversary of her Reading Room charity with a renewed call for action. She stressed that the mission now matters more than ever.
Currently, reading levels sit at their lowest point in recent history. Only one in two adults in the UK reads a book each year. Meanwhile, many readers struggle to finish books due to constant distractions.
As a result, the Queen urged people to rediscover reading in small, simple ways. She encouraged everyone to spend just five minutes a day with a book. That habit, she said, can fit easily into modern routines.
The Reading Room launched during the first lockdown in 2020. Initially, the project began with a handwritten list of nine favourite books. Soon after, the initiative expanded into an online book club.
By 2021, the community officially launched on social media platforms. Since then, it has grown into a global charity. Today, it connects more than 186,000 readers across 180 countries.
Moreover, neuroscience research supports the Queen Reading Mission message. Studies show five minutes of fiction reading can reduce stress quickly. The same research shows improved focus and reduced loneliness.
Consequently, the charity adopted the slogan “Make Room for Reading.” The message compares reading to healthy daily habits. For example, it mirrors goals like walking 10,000 steps or eating fruit.
Queen Camilla reflected on the charity’s growth with pride. She said books change how people think, feel, and connect. She also praised partnerships that bring books to vulnerable communities.
Over five years, the Queen personally recommended 76 books. In addition, British authors and artists supported the initiative. The King and the Princess of Wales also shared reading selections.
Furthermore, Queen Mathilde of Belgium contributed recommendations. More than 120 authors have participated in the project. Their involvement helped expand the charity’s reach.
In 2023, the book club became a registered charity. Since then, it has launched a podcast and annual literary festival. It also introduced a medal celebrating local reading champions.
The charity donated more than 2,300 books nationwide. These donations reached hospitals, shelters, and community groups. The programme focused on access for those most in need.
Meanwhile, concern continues to grow about children’s reading habits. Only one in three young people now enjoy reading. That figure marks the lowest level since records began.
Charity leaders describe the situation as a literacy crisis. Nevertheless, Queen Reading Mission continues pushing for change. Through small daily habits, the Queen hopes reading can thrive again.
