The UK has launched a UK defensive operation in response to growing regional tensions. Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed the United States can use British bases to strike Iranian missile sites. He emphasized that the UK will not take part in offensive attacks on Tehran.
US President Donald Trump expressed disappointment at the delay. He said Starmer initially refused access to Diego Garcia, a British-U.S. base in the Chagos Islands. Trump called the delay “far too long” and added it was unusual between the two countries.
The Prime Minister announced the decision after consultations with regional leaders. They requested more support against Iranian missile threats. Starmer stressed the move follows international law and acts under collective self-defence. Moreover, British forces continue defensive operations, intercepting Iranian drones over northern Iraq and Qatar.
Earlier, RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus suffered a drone strike. Officials confirmed operations at the base continue as normal. Family members of personnel were temporarily relocated for safety. Cypriot authorities said two additional drones were intercepted approaching the base. The drone likely launched before Starmer allowed U.S. forces to operate from British bases.
Opposition leaders criticized the UK defensive operation. Green Party leader Zack Polanski called it “another illegal Middle East war.” Liberal Democrats demanded parliamentary approval before U.S. forces use British bases. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said the decision was “better late than never” and described Starmer as a follower, not a leader.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper explained the UK acted to protect citizens. She said around 300,000 Britons are in affected countries, with 102,000 registered with the Foreign Office. Officials are reviewing all options, including a possible mass evacuation. Cooper emphasized that every effort will protect Britons trapped in the Gulf.
Despite these moves, British forces did not join the initial U.S.-Israeli strikes, which killed Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Starmer reiterated the UK defensive operation focuses solely on protecting lives and regional stability. He also emphasized the UK seeks a diplomatic solution to reduce tensions.
The UK defensive operation highlights the government’s priority: safeguarding British lives and interests. Officials continue monitoring threats, coordinating with allies, and preparing contingency plans across the Middle East.
