UUP Mike Nesbitt will step down as Leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, the Party confirmed on Monday. Meanwhile, the announcement comes as the Party prepares for the 2027 elections.

According to a Party spokesperson, the decision marks a pivotal moment. They added the Party aims to build on strong foundations and accelerate toward a bold vision.

Since returning in 2024, UUP Mike Nesbitt has served as Minister of Health. During this time, he led initiatives to strengthen the Party’s reputation for effective governance.

Furthermore, the spokesperson said Nesbitt introduced internal reforms, restored financial stability, modernised rules, and boosted policy and communications teams. As a result, his leadership left the Party resilient and ready for future challenges.

During his earlier leadership, Nesbitt oversaw electoral successes. These included local and European results in 2014, two MPs elected in 2015, and higher Assembly representation in 2016.

Nesbitt explained why he would not seek a fifth term. He said the next five-year mandate runs until May 2032, when he will turn 75. Therefore, he does not want to commit to full-time politics for that period.

“I returned to get the Party match fit for the next election campaign,” Nesbitt said. “That job is now done. Hence, it is time to select a new leader for 2027.”

Moreover, he said the Party will continue promoting confident and responsible Unionism. In addition, Nesbitt added that the Party must remain prepared for electoral success.

The UUP said Party Officers will soon outline the leadership selection process. They promised it would be inclusive, engaging, and ensure a smooth transition.

Party Chair Lord Elliott of Ballinamallard thanked Nesbitt for decades of service. He added the next leader will champion forward-looking Unionism, protect Northern Ireland’s place in the UK, and promote prosperity and reconciliation.

UUP Mike Nesbitt led the Party from 2012 to 2017 and again from 2024 to 2026. Currently, he has served as Minister of Health since May 2024.
