Prince William Shares Hilarious Windsor Castle Tourist Story

Must read

Prince William shared a hilarious moment from a Windsor Castle tour during his appearance on Apple+’s The Reluctant Traveler. The Prince of Wales gave actor Eugene Levy an exclusive look inside the historic royal residence.

During the episode, William revealed that the castle’s tour guides sometimes report amusing comments from visitors. One tourist, however, left a particularly memorable impression.

William explained that the visitor seemed amazed by the castle’s grandeur but asked a surprising question. “They looked around and said, ‘Wow, this place is incredible, but why did they have to build the castle so close to Heathrow Airport?’” he recounted.

The royal joked with Levy that, despite his own history knowledge, the comment reached a “whole new level.” He said the quote now ranks as a top tourist remark from Windsor Castle visits.

Heathrow Airport sits just 11 miles from Windsor, around a 16-minute drive. The airport opened in 1930 and became a major international hub by 1966. In contrast, Windsor Castle dates back to 1070 and has housed 40 monarchs.

The castle also serves as a venue for royal weddings, including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018, Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank the same year, and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh in 1999. King Charles and Queen Camilla held a civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall in 2005, followed by a Service of Prayer and Dedication at St George’s Chapel.

William told Levy that Windsor Castle held deep meaning for his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II. “For me, Windsor is her,” he said. “She loved it here and spent most of her time here. Showing you around is about doing it the way she would have wanted.” He added that the Queen adored her horses and often spent time with them on the grounds.

The episode also showcased William using an e-scooter to get around the estate. Levy expressed surprise, saying he had never tried one. William replied, “It gets around nicely. It’s quite fun.”

One reason the Prince and Princess of Wales moved their family to Windsor in 2022 was to spend more time with the Queen during her later years. In the coming months, the family will relocate from Adelaide Cottage to Forest Lodge, a Georgian mansion where they plan to stay even after William becomes king.

The Windsor Castle tour remains a major attraction, drawing around 1.4 million visitors annually. William’s shared story adds a humorous glimpse into life behind the castle walls.
